Speechwriter Meredith McIver says she has offered her resignation following Monday's gaffe, but it was rejected by Donald Trump.
Melania Trump's speechwriter has admitted a "mistake" over a speech that partially resembled remarks by Michelle Obama.
A staff writer for the Trump Organization, the company owned by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has claimed responsibility for inserting the passages.
Meredith McIver says she has offered her resignation, but it was rejected by Mr Trump.
The furore over similarities in Mrs Trump's speech on Monday night to parts of a 2008 address by First Lady Michelle Obama has dominated media coverage of the Republican National Convention.
Ms McIver said the language she used in the speech was recited to her by Mrs Trump in a phone call.
The speechwriter said she did not check to see how closely it matched Mrs Obama's address at the Democratic National Convention eight years ago.
"A person she (Melania Trump) has always liked is Michelle Obama," said Ms McIver's statement.
"Over the phone, she read me some passages from Mrs Obama's speech as examples.
"I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech.
"I did not check Mrs Obama's speeches.
"This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs Obama. No harm was meant."
Mr Trump said on Wednesday that the attention given to his wife's speech could help his campaign.
"Good news is Melania's speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics especially if you believe that all press is good press!" he wrote on Twitter.
Mr Trump was formally anointed on Tuesday evening as the Republican nominee for the 8 November White House election.
He is currently trailing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in opinion polls.
Also on Tuesday night, Mr Trump's children delivered speeches about their father, the family man.
"My father's desire for excellence is contagious," Tiffany Trump said.
Wednesday's programme will see Mr Trump's running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, take to the stage.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz, the nominee's fiercest challenger in the primaries, is also to scheduled to speak.
