Man dies after operation by suspected fake doctor

Singida Regional Police Commander (RPC) Thobias Sedoyeka told reporters here yesterday that law enforcers were pursuing one middle aged man believed to have performed the procedure Thursday last week at Kinyambuli village, Nkinto ward and disappeared after the patient died.

RPC named the deceased as Israel Shaban, resident of Mazangili village, adding that the operation was performed at the suspect’s house. He said the quack doctor’s victim bled profusely before succumbing to the wounds inflicted as the suspect took to his heels to escape the arm of the law.

The regional police boss said they were trailing former government employee who worked in the health sector but was not qualified doctor.

“After leaving public service, the suspect we are pursuing carved out a career as doctor, going as far as calling himself a surgeon and acting to that effect,” he said.

He appealed to citizens to be wary of quacks who pretend to be doctors and offer the so called treatments including specialized ones such as surgery.

The officer also appealed to residents of the area to volunteer any information about not only the suspect they are trailing but also all quacks endangering the lives of innocent, unsuspecting Tanzanians.

Incidents of people pretending to be doctors have increased in the country with the recent one taking place in Morogoro Region. The man did not only access the hospital premises, he got himself a doctor’s coat and was arrested while visiting patients in the wards.

In another development, RPC Sedoyeka said Sharifa Juma (12), a Standard Four pupil at Mgungira primary school, Iramba District, has been killed and police are holding a 24-year-old suspect.

He said the minor’s killer cut her head and throat with a sharp object. He said the death is believed to have resulted from a family conflict whereby the deceased was the step sister of the suspect who was being held by police.
